When we think of Harry Houdini, what inevitably comes to mind is the image of an athletic man in underclothes, loaded with chains and escaping from the most unlikely of prisons: a water tank, a safe or a milk jug sealed with padlocks. That was a bit strange for George Hardeen, because admittedly, he knows little about his great-uncle. This is filled with water while Houdini is placed head down, in full view of the audience. "And I think that's the purpose of these seances - to give an opportunity for folks to come back and talk about Houdini," he says. The greatest and most sensational of all Houdini's escapes was without doubt his 'Chinese Water Torture Cell.' In this trick, Houdini was to escape an extraordinary contraption resembling a fish tank. They would beseech him to just show a sign, move something on the table."Īfter about half an hour, he says, "they threw in the towel, and then it was over." The group went to a really nice bar, drank some scotch and just talked. People came to his stage shows with elaborate. He often added a river or lake to the escape trick to spice things up a bit. "They had a medium, and he was very entertaining, calling upon Houdini in a very dramatic way. Handcuffs: Harry Houdini could get out of any set of handcuffs. "The Houdini legacy has taken a new branch," says Hardeen, "because my wife is Navajo, and my children are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation."
